Native to South America, the ubaia tree can be found in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guyanas. They thrive in shaded areas, and newly planted young trees develop relatively slowly. In addition to being planted in backyard gardens for their edible fruits and as attractive plants, the delectable sweet fruits are also collected from the wild. Fruit can be consumed fresh, in ice cream, and in jellies. The thin-skinned, 4 cm in diameter fruit has a thick, juicy pulp that is flavorful, aromatic, and sweet.
