All over the tropics and subtropics of the world, the edible fruits of the Birba/Rollinia fruit plant, also known as Biriba, Lemon Meringue Pie Fruit, or Wild Sugar-Apple, are grown in cultivation. Tropical South America is the plant’s natural habitat.
Large, conical or spherical in shape, the fruit is immature when green and ripens when it becomes yellow. The tasty flesh is bright white or translucent and feels jelly-like. The smooth, almost creamy, fibrous flesh of a ripe Rollinia fruit will readily peel off of the fruit’s skin, revealing its tiny, dark-brown, inedible elliptical seeds. Rollinia fruit has a pleasantly acidic flavour with notes of banana, pineapple, coconut, and other tropical flavours. Ripe fruit can easily be cut into halves or wedges. The pulp can be removed with a spoon or spoons, and the seeds can be discarded.
Iron, vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, dietary fibre, protein, and carbohydrates are all abundant in rollinia fruit. Important amino acids like tryptophan, lysine, methionine, and threonine are among those present. The fruit was utilised as a stimulant to assist cool the body when it got too hot as well as to prevent scurvy. The ground-up seeds were used as a digestive aid.
