An edible fruit tree native to Brazil’s Atlantic rainforest called the Rainforest Plum (Eugenia Candolleana) is also known locally by the Portuguese names Cambui Roxo or Murtinha. It is rather uncommon in the wild and has only been used sparingly in landscaping because of its vivid green foliage and purple-black fruits.
It has a thin purple-black skin that is surrounded by a wet, firm, whitish pulp that is holding a solitary, loose seed.
The fruit is similar to a jaboticaba in taste and sweetness.
There are both purple and red fruited forms.
In the tropics, the Rainforest Plum blooms at least 4 to 6 times a year.
They include zinc, folate, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and more lutein than an avocado (for eye health). They are also high in vitamin E. In Sergipe’s traditional medicine, the infusion of leaves has been used to alleviate fever and pain.
