The plant species Artocarpus hypargyreus is a member of the Moraceae family and is indigenous to southern China in Eastern Asia. The tree is between 20 and 50 feet in height. It often grows fairly slowly. The tree has lovely, glossy green leaves and is quite beautiful. The bark has a milky latex in it. The same tree bears both male and female flowers. The tree’s edible fruit and timber are collected from the wild. In China and the United States, it is also grown for its fruit (Florida). Fruits typically ripen without seeds in the late summer and early fall. Fruits are typically consumed both fresh and dried. Smallish orange-brown fruit with scarlet flesh and fuzzy skin has a nice, somewhat tart and sweet flavour.
