A semi-deciduous tree in the Myrtaceae family, the guabiyu is native to Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Southern and Eastern Brazil in southern and eastern South America. Within the plant’s native habitat, the tree is commonly cultivated for its edible fruit. Additionally, the plant is grown for decorative purposes, the wood is taken from wild trees, and it is used medicinally. The globular, deep purple fruit has a 25mm maximum diameter and a rich pulp with a sweet, pleasing flavour. Both tropical and subtropical regions benefit from the plant.
