Flag The custard apple family includes the shrub or small tree known as the “large flower pawpaw,” or Asimina Obovata. It can be found in dry wooded areas and open sandy hammocks in Florida, where it is native. Large green fruit that is delicious follows showy white blooms that bloom in the late winter to early summer. Its pollen sheds in the form of constant tetrads. The fruit, like the others in the genus, is renowned for being sweet and custard-like. It can be consumed raw or used in baking or pie filling. The fruits must be plucked from the ground before they ripen because they fall from the tree too early. The tree does well in subtropical climates.
