“Cabinho Café Ipuina” Plinia Trunciflora The delectable jaboticaba tree, also known as “Cabinho Cafe,” grows 4 to 8 metres high in its natural habitat. José Aurélio Vilela, a well-known Brazilian collector, acquired this variety. The cultivar is called “cabinho,” which means “peduncle,” “Ipuina,” after a small Brazilian village where it was probably first discovered, and “Cafe,” after the fruit’s flavour, which is comparable to that of coffee fruit (not the coffee bean, but rather the sweet berry). The plant can be found in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, Mata dos Pinhais, and states ranging from Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul. The tree has a dense, spherical crown with branches that are somewhat drooping. The fruit of this Plinia trunciflora hangs from long peduncles on the trunk, frequently in clusters of two to five fruit. The fruit has a modest crown like Sabara and is globose, black, smooth, shiny, and filled with a pleasant flesh. It also includes medium-sized seeds. It is one of the best-tasting Jaboticaba cultivars, with fruit that is normally 2 cm or more in diameter and a rather distinctive flavour character. While mature leaves are lanceolate, glossy, smooth, and have barely perceptible lateral veins away from the main central vein, new growth is scarlet red.
