Evergreen Garcinia prainiana trees can reach heights of 10 metres. It is a species of Garcinia known as the button mangosteen or cherapu. Native to the Asiatic tropics, specifically Thailand and Malaysia. The subacid-tasting, globose fruit is orange in colour and up to 5 cm in diameter. An odd pulp with a sweet-sour flavour that some have compared to tangerine, but it differs from its cousin, the purple mangosteen, in that it has a tissue-thin skin instead of a hard rind, making it much simpler to eat out of hand. The tree is commonly planted in Java and the Malacca peninsula for its fruit, and the eatable fruit is frequently collected from the wild for usage locally.
