A relatively uncommon species of tree in the Sapotaceae family is Pouteria guianensis. Its native range extends from Trinidad through South Tropical America and Panama. It is a medium to large tree, reaching a height of 30 metres. The palatable fruit is gathered from the wild and occasionally offered for sale in nearby marketplaces. Orange fruits up to 5 cm in diameter, like the Abiu (Pouteria caimito) fruit, are produced by the tree. Normally, each fruit has two seeds. Tastes like a cross between Abiu and a star apple. Very little to no latex, excellent. In five to six years from seed, it begins to bear fruit.
