The well-branched Diospyros californica grows to a height of 25 feet (7 metres). It is a fascinating, wild variety of black sapote from Baja California. This unusual species grows in its natural habitat on slopes and may be drought and cold hardy (to a few degrees below freezing). The tree yields mushy, brown-black fruits with a dark chocolate brown exterior. Fruits are stated to have a moderate to sweet, pudding-like flavour and to be palatable.
