A tropical tree species that yields eatable fruit goes by the name “longan.” It is one of the most well-known tropical members of the Sapindaceae soapberry family, which also includes the lychee and rambutan. Although less aromatic in flavour, the longan’s fruit resembles the lychee in appearance. It is indigenous to China and tropical Asia. The longan is so named because the black seed, which appears through the translucent flesh like an iris or pupil, resembles an eyeball when the fruit is shelled. The seed is tiny, rounded, and firm, and it is black with an enamel-like lacquer coating.
