Clavija lehmannii is a magnificent and extremely uncommon palm-like, sparingly branching shrub or small tree with long, undivided leaves and golfball-sized, spherical, orange fruits that is native to tropical forests in the western Andes of Colombia between 800 and 1300 m. The fruits, which develop straight on the stem, have a creamy, sweet, delectable pulp sandwiched between a few huge seeds. Clavija lehmannii, which can withstand chilly temperatures but not freezes, is an excellent decorative and fruit tree for the tropics and certain warm temperate zones.
