The prickly Sombra de Touro tree belongs to the Santalaceae family. It is native to southern South America’s Argentina, Uruguay, and southern and eastern Brazil. Normally, the tree grows to a height of 3 to 6 metres. It is best to plant in a sunny area for better development. Locals gather the 3 cm-diameter edible fruits from the wild and consume them. The fruit’s delicate exterior hides a very juicy and tasty pulp. The herb is also used as a regional remedy.
