The rose myrtle, or Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow to a height of 1 to 4 metres. In southern and southeast Asia, from India east to southern China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Philippines, and south to Malaysia and Sulawesi, it is a superb ornamental shrub. It produces a stunning display of deep rose-pink or mauve blossoms when it blooms. Locals utilise the herb for both food and medicine and gather it from the wild. It is widely grown in tropical and subtropical countries for both decorative purposes and for its delicious fruit. In addition to being regularly consumed fresh, fruits can also be baked or cooked into jams and pies. The fully ripe fruit has a flavour that is exquisite and reminiscent of blueberries. The fruit has traditionally been used as a remedy for dysentery and diarrhoea.
