The rainforests of eastern Sumatra, as well as northern and western Borneo, are home to the extremely uncommon fruit tree Baccaurea costulata, often known as Red Tampoi. Tampoi can be as small as a 5 m tall shrub or as huge as a 25 m or more tall tree with a dense crown. The plant is also grown in gardens, and the fruit is sold in nearby markets. The edible fruit is harvested from the wild for usage locally. The wonderful and delicious fruits taste like strawberries, and the fruit quality of the tree is true from seed. For optimal growth, Baccaurea costulata requires a humid, tropical climate.
