An intriguing guava relative, the Purple Forest Guava (Psidium Eugeniaefolia/Araca-Una), grows in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest. It is a bushy shrub tree with glossy leaves that are similar to Strawberry Guavas, and it typically flowers three years after it is planted.
Round, muddy green to dark purple, smooth-skinned guavas are known as purple guavas. The inner pulp has a vivid, translucent purple colour and a flavour that is a little bit sweet and acidic. Multiple tiny, hard seeds are encased in the mushy pulp. Purple guavas are typically eaten fresh.
In addition to being a healthy source of potassium, magnesium, fibre, and vitamins A and C, Purple Forest Guavas are also high in anthocyanins and carotenoids, particularly cyanidin 3-glucoside, lutein, and beta-carotene.
