A kind of palm called Bactris gasipaes is indigenous to the tropical jungles of Central and South America. It is a multi-stemmed, evergreen feather palm that may reach a height of 20 metres and has prickly stems. It is extensively grown in South America for its palatable fruit. Because of the alkaloid pupunhadine, fruit are always consumed cooked, although seeds can be eaten raw or cooked as a meal to flavour beverages. Fruit has a mealy, nutty flavour that takes some getting used to. It is boiled in salt water for 30 to 60 minutes, at which point it has a floury texture, an oily flavour, and good nutritional value. It is incredibly nutritious and abundant in both protein and carbohydrates. Additionally, an oil known as macanilla oil was produced from the seeds.
