Originally from the Andes mountains, Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru, papayuelo is a rare relative of the papaya. It is a small, sparsely branched tree or shrub that rarely grows taller than 5 m, with thick branches, large, palmate leaves, and sizable, angled fruits that range in colour from yellow to red. According to reports, the yellow-orange fruits have a lovely, sweet flavour that is similar to apple. Fruits can be consumed raw, jammed, or juiced. The fruits also preserve well, therefore The eatable fruit is collected from the wild and occasionally seen being sold in nearby marketplaces.
