The nutmeg tree, which is aromatic and evergreen, has spreading branches and a golden, fleshy fruit that resembles an apricot or peach in appearance. It is indigenous to Indonesia and is extensively planted for its fruit in India. It has a greyish black bark. The leaves are leathery and elliptic to oblong-lanceolate. The fragrant, creamy yellow flowers are carried in umbel-like cymes. When completely developed, it splits in half, revealing a single edible seed, the nutmeg, surrounded by a crimson-colored pulp. Grayish-brown ovals with wrinkled surfaces, measuring 1-1.5 inches long, are dried nutmegs. The spice made of the seed is used to flavour a variety of baked foods, meats, sausages, sauces, vegetables, and drinks like eggnog. It has a distinctive, pleasant scent and a somewhat warming taste.
