A big, subterranean, evergreen palm with a stem diameter of up to 45 cm, the Nypa fruticans grows in a loose clump. It is a type of palm that is indigenous to the estuaries and coastlines of the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is sometimes referred to as the mangrove palm or nipa palm. It is the only palm that is thought to be mangrove-adapted. This stem develops bunches of enormous, upright leaves that can grow to be up to 6 metres long at regular intervals. Harvested when the fruits are immature, the seed has a delicious creamy flavour.The white endosperm of immature seeds is sweet and jelly-like, and is consumed as a snack. When the seeds mature the seeds become very hard and it also some times eaten . A sugary sap is obtained from the inflorescence,It is used mainly to make an alcoholic beverage, but also to make syrup, sugar and vinegar
