The Nam Nam Fruit, also known as Cynometra Cauliflora, is a kidney-shaped, brownish-green fruit that is endemic to Malaysia and can also be found in Sri Lanka, India, and South East Asia. One brown, flattened seed is present inside the pod, which has a rough and wrinkled exterior. It has a sweet, slightly acidic yellow pulp that is juicy and aromatic.

Planting and Care

Namnam thrives in humid, tropical lowlands; it enjoys full sun but can tolerate little shade; ideal conditions include annual precipitation of 1500–2000 mm and daily temperatures of 22–35 C. The tree is wind resistant.

Special Feature

Boiling the leaves and drinking them can treat diarrhoea, ease urinary incontinence, and cure diabetes.

Uses/Benefits

It is cooked with sugar to create compote, but it can also be used to make fruit salad, pickles, or sambal. The seeds from the fruits, which also have medicinal qualities and are utilised in folk medicine preparations, produce oil that is used to treat skin conditions.
