Mundu Fruit/ Garcinia Dulcis is a globe-shaped fruit with a tangy taste. Garcinia Dulcis is an evergreen tree that is harvested from the wild as a local source of food, medicines, and dyeing material.

This fruit has pale yellow textured thin outer skin. It also has fibrous pulp and can be eaten raw but is a bit sour. The orange-colored fruits have a thin skin and are 5 – 8cm wide with slightly pointed ends with 1 to 5 seeds inside, The fruits can be eaten fresh, and it has an acid, soft, juicy pulp They can also be made into an excellent jam.

Fruit extracts are used as an expectorant for coughs, or to treat scurvy. Crushed roots are used to relieve fever and counteract poisoning. Crushed bark and gum resin are used to treat wounds and pounded seeds are applied onto swellings.

Planting and Care

Best adapted to tropical wet and dry regions where the photoperiod lasts 12 hours or less, it grows best in tropical settings where the temperature is often warm. It prefers clear or partly cloudy skies, although it may also thrive in mild shade.

The fruit supports wound healing, pain relief, and skin health. The fruit is useful for treating diarrhoea and biliary issues. Additionally useful for treating burns and foul breath is munu fruit.

Uses/Benefits

Scurvy can be treated with crushed fruit extract, wounds can be cleaned with crushed bark, and swellings can be treated with pounded leaves. The fruit is eaten raw or made into sherbet. Jam, fruit paste, and butter are further products made from the fruits.
