The herbaceous perennial vine Siraitia grosvenorii, often known as monkfruit or luohan guo, belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family of gourds. It is a southern China native. The plant’s fruit extract, known as mogrosides, is what it is most famous for and has been used as a natural sweetener in China for about a thousand years because of its flavour. It produces a sweetness sensation 250 times stronger than sucrose. It has also been used to cure colds and sore throats in traditional Chinese medicine. China, Japan, and the US have all employed this fruit as an appropriate and secure low-calorie sweetener.
