In South America, this evergreen herbaceous shrub is widely grown for its apricot-sized, purple, and cream-striped fruits that resemble pleasantly acidic melon. It takes only a few months to grow Solanum caripense from seeds and fruits. It has been suggested that Solanum caripense may be the pepino’s wild ancestor because the fruit closely resembles the closely related pepino.
