Marirana is a fast-growing, evergreen tree that can reach heights of 10 to 20 metres and is a member of the Chrysobalanaceae family of flowering plants. A sunny location is preferred for improved growth. Mesoamerica and South America are the original home of Couepia. For domestic consumption, the edible fruit is frequently collected from the wild and sold in nearby marketplaces. The tree is also frequently grown in Amazonia, both for its fruit and for the great shade it offers. The single, big seed is located inside the 8 cm long by 6 cm diameter yellow-green fruit. Its pulp is sweet, juicy, and fiberless, and it is typically consumed raw. The fruit is also a good source of carotenoids.
