A native of Southeast Asia, including northeast India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, Antidesma velutinosum is a shrub or tree that can reach heights of 3 to 15 metres. Sometimes, the plant is taken from the wild and used locally as a food source and perhaps as a medicinal. The bignay-like fruits are borne in protracted clusters and turn red-black as they ripen. They taste sweet and can be consumed fresh or made into preserves.
