Kiwano Melon Live plant (Cucumis metuliferus)

Cucumis metuliferus, an active annual climber from the cucumber and melon family Cucurbitaceae, has stems up to 3 metres long. The stems scurry across the ground and up into the nearby vegetation, where they use tendrils to affix themselves. The African horned cucumber is also known as the horned melon, spiked melon, jelly melon, kiwano, or cuke-a-saurus. For use as food and medicine by the local people, the plant is harvested from the wild. In tropical and subtropical climes, the plant is occasionally farmed commercially for its fruit thanks to improved cultivars that have been created.
The plant was specifically created in Israel, New Zealand, and Kenya as a commercial fruit that has gained popularity in Western European markets. Its fruit has spines that resemble horns, therefore the name “horned melon.” Orange exterior and lime green, juicy, slightly sweet jelly-like flesh characterise the ripe fruit. When the ripe fruit is sliced open and dusted with sugar, the flavour is greatly improved. Also edible are the seeds and leaves.
