A tree species in the Sapotaceae family is called Manilkara hexandra. Most of south Asia, including China’s Hainan and southern Guangxi provinces, the Indian subcontinent’s Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka, and Indo-Cambodia, China’s Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, is home to this plant, which can reach heights of 3 to 12 metres.
The plant is taken out of the wild primarily for the edible fruit that is used locally. The fruit can be eaten dry or fresh and is occasionally grown in the tropics and subtropics. It has a sweet flavour but is a little bit astringent. The fruit’s seeds have medical value, and rayan oil is a light yellow oil derived from them. This species is also frequently used as a rootstock for sapodillas.
