A member of the Myrtaceae plant family, Eugenia singampattiana (Jungle Guava), is a severely endangered species. It only grows in the hills of Singampatti and Papanasam in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the medicinally valuable vulnerable tree species found in the southern Western Ghats of peninsular India. Up to 5 m tall little trees are present. Bark is smooth and brownish on the trunk. Branchlets as well as branches. For local use as food and medicine, the edible fruits are frequently collected from the wild. This species is a good source of alkaloids, coumarins, and catechins and is frequently used in the treatment of rheumatism, bodily discomfort, and giddiness. The edible fruits, which range in colour from yellow to orange, can be consumed fresh and have a very unique sweet and tart berry flavour.
