An evergreen tree with a rounded, dense crown, Diospyros mespiliformis is mostly found in tropical Africa, from Senegal to Yemen, Eritrea, and Mozambique in the north to Namibia, Transvaal, and Mozambique in the south. It belongs to the Ebenaceae family and is linked to edible persimmons and real ebony. Due to the great value of the wood, it is frequently taken from the wild and exported globally. For the local population, the tree is a significant source of food, medicine, and other supplies.
Indigenous people enjoy eating ripe fruits, especially young children. It can be consumed fresh, cooked, dried, or fermented to produce beverages. Its sweet flavour is reminiscent of persimmon. The globular, yellow fruit has a maximum diameter of 25mm.
