A species of tree belonging to the genus Jacaratia and family Caricaceae is called Jacaratia spinosa. It is found in South American countries like Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua that are home to tropical forests. It is a rapidly growing deciduous tree that can reach heights of 10 to 40 metres and has a narrow, open crown. The tree also produces a latex with therapeutic qualities, which is harvested from the wild for local consumption. In decorative plantings, the tree’s peculiar shape might be advantageous. The fruit is around 5 cm diameter and 8 cm long. Typically, the fruits are consumed either raw or cooked. Its fleshy pulp has a tasty flavour that is sweet, peppery, and agreeable.
Thruit has anti-inflammatory, potent anthelmintic, and mild hydragogue properties. Additionally, latex made from the tree is used medicinally to treat stomach infections.
