Native to S. America and eastern Brazil, Swartzia langsdorffii is an evergreen tree with a dense, rectangular crown. It has an 8 to 14 metre height range. For its timber and occasionally for its fruit, the tree is taken from the wild. It is a stunning ornamental tree, particularly in bloom. It produces fruit intermittently in November and from February to April. The fruits are actually pods that must be cracked open when fully ripe in order to consume the yellowish aril, which resembles chicken fat in appearance. It has a slightly astringent flavour when it’s fresh, but the cooked, mildly sweetened arils have a flavour that tastes like a cross between “papaya and orange.” eneral.
