The ice cream bean, also known as Inga edulis or Inga spectabilis, is a fast-growing tree that belongs to the Fabaceae family along with green beans, shelling beans, and peanuts. It is botanically known as Inga edulis. Within three years of germination, it typically bears fruit. The ice cream bean tree is an evergreen with a crown that is only somewhat dense. The beans are enclosed in a delicious, cottony pulp in the foot-long pods. The pulp has the consistency of cotton candy and a flavour that occasionally resembles vanilla ice cream with a hint of cinnamon.

Planting and Care

Prefers sandy or loamy well-draining soils, light potassium fertiliser if dropping leaves, needs frequent watering until established, may endure drought to partial flooding once mature.
