Evergreen climber Willughbeia coriacea expands quickly to 30 m in length. The woody stems use their hooked, leafless branchlets to cling to other plants for support. The plant produces latex of high calibre. The plant was once grown for its latex, which was used to make rubber, but with the rise of synthetic rubber and the popularity of the Brazilian rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), its use has diminished. The plant also produces a fruit that is eaten locally and is used medicinally. The orange-pulp-filled yellow-green fruits have a deliciously tart and sweet flavour.
