The Myrtaceae family includes the 3 to 5 m tall tree or shrub Eugenia uruguayensis. It is native to northern Argentina, southern Brazil, and Uruguay. For usage as food in the community, the edible fruit is collected from the wild. Small, elongated, berry-like, and ripening to red or purple, the fruits have a sweet, savoury flavour. From seed, it begins to produce fruit in 3 to 4 years. Fruits develop on a short tree that grows bushily to a height of 12–18 feet (3-6 metres).
