Fast-growing but short-lived, Solanum diploconos is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 1 to 4 metres. In New Zealand, the plant has been tried as a fruit crop, although reportedly without much commercial success. Acceptance of the berry as a fruit crop will probably be hampered by its glandular puberulence and thick, leathery mesocarp. Fruit can be consumed either raw or cooked. The little orange fruit is moderately acidic, juicy, and has a flavour similar to a tree tomato. Due to the plant’s little stature and lovely flowers and foliage, it is sometimes planted as an ornamental. Because of human activities over the past many centuries, the forests that make up this species’ native habitat have experienced severe reductions.
