Paullinia cupana is the scientific name for guarana. Brazilian cocoa and Zoom are other names for this plant that is a member of the Sapindaceae, also known as the Soapberry family. The term “guarana” refers to a climbing plant that was used to make a beverage by the Guarani tribe of the Amazon. A South American fruit that oddly enough resembles the human eye with seeds that are the size of coffee beans, black in colour, and partially covered by arils that are white. One of the main ingredients in energy beverages like Monster, Red Bull, and Rockstar, this fruit has four times the caffeine of coffee beans.
