Small to medium-sized trees can reach heights of 8 to 20 metres and are known as Syzygium polycephalum. Southeast Asia’s Indonesia is its native home. For local consumption, the plant is frequently grown in home gardens in Java as a fruit-tree. Edible fruits and young shoots are also collected from the wild. Raw or prepared consumption is possible for the ripe fruits. A pleasant sourness permeates the purple berry. Young leaves and sprouts can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable, and it is used to make a highly regarded jelly.
