A genuine climber that blends into the surrounding vegetation, Salacia macrophylla is a shrub that occasionally has a scrambling tendency. For use locally as food, medicine, and a source of twine, the plant is gathered from the wild. It’s native to Eastern Asia, including western India, the Andaman Islands, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia, as well as New Britain. It is good for growing as a shrub or across pergolas and trellises in parks and gardens. The fruit is a subglobose drupe with a diameter of 5 to 6 cm, occasionally up to 8 cm, and resembles a little citrus fruit. It has a delicate and beautiful flavour, and because of the caramel flavour and the delectable scented vanilla juice, I think of it as a really uncommon and unusual fruit.
