Adoxaceae is a family of flowering plants that includes the genus Sambucus. Common names for the many species include elder and elderberry. Due to genetic and physical comparisons with plants in the genus Adoxa, the genus was previously assigned to the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, but was later moved to the Adoxaceae subfamily. It is a tiny, deciduous tree or shrub that rarely reaches a height of 10 metres (33 feet). The shrub has both edible and medicinal fruit. Late autumn sees the production of the fruit, which is a glossy, dark purple to black berry with a diameter of 3 to 5 mm. For use locally, it is collected from the wild and boiled to make a syrup. used to make jams, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages.
