The Myrtaceae family includes dwarf mulchi, which is indigenous to Costa Rica and Panama in the southernmost point of North America. The tree grows slowly but blooms very early—at just 4–5 years old—and if left unpruned, adopts the shape of a tiny shrub. The tree produces 3 centimetre yellow fruits with a thin layer of flesh within that are slightly peppery and tasty. Similar to the jaboticaba, fruits often develop directly from the trunk or main branches and exhibit longitudinal ridging. After several years of production, the tree might produce multiple times year. The Plinia inflata and Plinia edulis leaves are comparable.
