A medium-sized, evergreen tree with a dense crown, Syzygium polyanthum, also known as Indian bayleaf, Indonesian bay leaf, and daun salam, can reach heights of up to 30 metres. It is a plant species that is indigenous to Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It belongs to the family Myrtaceae. Indonesians frequently flavour their meals with the plant’s leaves, and it also produces an edible fruit with a pulp that has a hint of astringency. In many South-East Asian cuisines of meat, fish, rice, and vegetables, the aromatic leaves—whether fresh or dried—are used as a spice. Extracts are also used medicinally to treat diarrhoea.
