A medium-growing deciduous tree, the date plum can reach heights of 6 m (19 ft) by 9 m (29 ft). It is a plant of the genus Diospyros that is widely cultivated and has its origins in subtropical southwest Asia and southeast Europe. The little fruit, which tastes a bit like dates and plums and gets its name in English. When fully ripe, it is typically consumed fresh or processed into jelly.
