The perennial Solanum stramoniifolium has highly thorny, rather woody stems and can be either erect or spreading. It can reach a height and width of two metres. The plant is occasionally grown in Colombia and Peru for its edible fruits, although it is typically gathered from the wild for local consumption. Its native habitat is Trinidad-Tobago and Central and Southern Tropical America. Fruits can be consumed raw, although they are primarily used to make juices. The globose, orange or red fruit has many tiny seeds and measures 12 to 24 mm in diameter.
