Clammy Cherry Live Plant (Cordia dichotoma)

A member of the Boraginaceae family, Cordia dichotoma is a little deciduous flowering tree with a short bole and spreading crown. Although some specimens can grow as big as 20 metres or more, the average size of this tree is 3 to 4 metres. Originally from Eastern Asia, including China, Japan, the Indian subcontinent, Myanmar, Indo-China, Malaysia, and Australia. In addition to being frequently farmed for its fruits throughout the extent of its natural occurrence, the edible fruit is often collected from the wild for use in regional medicine. The fruit is a 15mm diameter yellow or pinkish-yellow dazzling globose or ovoid drupe that is encased in an expanded calyx that resembles a saucer. Usually, it is either consumed raw or cooked. As it ripens, the pulp becomes viscid and the fruit turns black.

The use of Cordia dichotoma as a medicine dates back to the ancient Egyptians and has a lengthy and documented history. The fruit, leaves, and bark are all prized for their diverse diuretic and demulcent effects and have therapeutic characteristics as well. They are used most frequently to relieve chest pain, coughs, and stomachaches.
