A medium-sized, sparsely branching tree up to 20 metres tall, Jacaratia digitata has conical spines on its trunk and branches and huge, palmate leaves on long stalks. It is indigenous to low- and moderate-elevation rainforests in the western and southern areas of the Amazon, from Colombia to Bolivia. It is occasionally planted in its native habitat for its edible fruit, and the edible fruits are occasionally harvested from the wild for local consumption. Female plants bear edible fruit that is oblong, angled, yellowish orange, and papaya-like.
