The nightshade family includes the South American plant Physalis peruviana, sometimes known as Cape gooseberry or goldenberry, and it is indigenous to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It typically grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet. It can grow to a height of 6 feet in ideal circumstances, although assistance is required. The ribbed, finely haired branches of this purple plant grow widely. Heart-shaped leaves that are oppositely oriented measure 2.5 to 6 inches long. The berry-like fruits have a distinct sweet and tart tropical flavour that combines notes of cherry tomato, pineapple, fig, and strawberry. They can be eaten fresh. The skin is completely edible and resembles a tomato’s skin. Once the tough exterior has been broken, the luscious inside with its numerous little, eatable seeds is soft and juicy.
