Ugni myricoides is a priceless fruit that is native to the chilly, humid forests of central and southern Chile. It is a member of the Myrtaceae family and is related to the guava. It is a close relative of the Chilean guava with plump fruits that have dark purple or black flesh. The delicate, 2 m tall evergreen shrubs bear the abundant, centimeter-sized fruits in profusion. The fruit is wonderful and little known outside of Chile, where the people seek them out zealously for fresh consumption and jam making. The plant is showy in and of itself. It thrives in cultivation in warm, temperate areas between USDA Zones 9 and 11.
