An evergreen tree with a thick canopy, the black apple is indigenous to Queensland and New South Wales in Australia. It can reach a height of 30 metres. The tree is cut down for its edible fruit as well as for its premium commercial timber. Because of its hardness and attractive markings, its wood is utilised to make high-end cabinets. The 20–60mm long, oblong or globose fruit is purple or black and has 2–5 seeds. Its edible flesh is a deep orange and red colour and tastes sweet and slightly aromatic, similar to watermelon and apples.
