Bahia Cherry Live Plants (Eugenia bahiensis)

 

 

Northeastern Brazil is home to the Bahia Cherry, or Eugenia Bahiensis. This cherry has a sweet flavour and is a pretty plant. When ripe, this extremely unusual fruit changes from purple to black. Antioxidants and vitamin A are abundant in it. It develops into a medium-sized tree and produces clusters of fruits.

Planting and Care

Seeds should be cleaned, dried, and dusted with a fungicide. The fruits are usually picked manually in the cool of the early morning and must be handled with care.

Special Feature

The fruits are considered beneficial to patients with liver ailments, diarrhoea and dysentery, as well as those with coughs or colds. The juice may be gargled to relieve sore throat.

Uses/Benefits

Bahia cherries are eaten out of hand. sauce or puree can be utilized as a topping on cake, pudding, ice cream or sliced bananas, or used in other culinary products.
